Event Recap: Defining Yourself as a Leader in Any Industry

The event was moderated by Jen Kebea, President of Campus Philly, and featured a panel of speakers:
- Bettsy McKlaine, Director of Adult and Graduate Admissions, Neumann University
- Kaela Blanks, VP of Emerging Leaders for Philly SHRM
- Alain Joinville, Director of Strategic Communications and Programs, Office of Immigrant Affairs, City of Philadelphia
- Michelle Sonsino, Director of Institutional Giving and Government Affairs, The University of the Arts
The theme of the meeting was describing oneself as a leader in any industry, focusing on authentic and inclusive leadership.
When asked about what leadership really looks like, the panelists each shared their perspectives. Bettsy emphasized the importance of empowerment, both for oneself and others. Kaela highlighted the significance of authentic leadership and vulnerability. Alain spoke on communication as a key aspect of strong leadership, particularly in conveying vision and mobilizing people. Michelle underscored the importance of mentorship and learning as a leader.
The panelists also discussed how they intentionally brand themselves as leaders. Bettsy started, sharing the value of self-reflection, and learning from her experiences. She has worked intentionally to overcome imposter syndrome and build confidence with the support of leaders who believed in her. Kaela described the significance of self-awareness and finding spaces outside of her day job to lead. They each discussed the importance of networking with peers and other leaders to broaden perspectives and stay on top of their professions.
During the audience Q&A session, on participants asked about the panelists’ roles in evolving technology and leadership. Kaela emphasized the importance of using the right tools for the job and leveraging social media and technology for amplification and inclusion. Bettsy mentioned her use of LinkedIn to brand herself and share her perspectives.
Another question was posed about re-establishing oneself as a leader in a new industry. Michelle shared her recent experience transitioning from communication and PR to government and community affairs, highlighting the value of networking, mentorship, and guidance regardless of age or experience.
In their closing remarks, the panelists provide nuggets of advice for becoming authentic and inclusive leaders. Bettsy stressed the importance of self-awareness, empathy, and the ability to see situations from others’ perspectives. Michelle emphasized gratitude, effective communication, and finding win-win situations. Alain advocated for continuous learning, seeking unbiased opinions and meeting with people outside of one’s organization or industry. Kaela encouraged individuals to find their own leadership style.
In conclusion, the event explored various aspects of leadership, including empowerment, authenticity, communication, self-reflection, branding, networking, self-care, inclusivity, advocacy, and continuous learning. The panelists provided valuable insights and practical advice for aspiring leaders in any industry.
