What initially attracted you to the world of public relations?
I've known my whole life that writing, storytelling and communications would be where I’d find my career. The notion that I could share important information, inform decisions, communicate emotions and influence behaviors through the written (or spoken) word is what appeals to me. I still—after all these years—get a charge when a communication is proven effective. It’s the best feeling!
Where do you work and what does your current role entail?
I’m on the Marketing + Communications team at the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter. It’s my dream job, as it combines my skill set with my passion. My role is multifaceted in that I have my hands in media relations, marketing campaign creation, social media, internal communications and more. I interact with my colleagues, constituents, volunteers and media staff, and I juggle multiple projects, events and deadlines. Never a dull moment at the Alzheimer’s Association—and I love it!
Are you an active volunteer in any organizations beyond PPRA?
Yes! Thanks to the positive influence of my parents, I have been a life-long volunteer. I carry forward the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association not only as a staff member, but also as a volunteer. I want to give back to the organization that did so much for my family. You see, my father lived with Alzheimer’s for eight years. I serve as a support group facilitator, advocate, speaker and fundraiser. It’s been a wonderful 25 years (and counting).
I’m also a member of Delta Zeta international sorority and have been serving in leadership and philanthropic roles since my college days. I’m currently the treasurer of my local alumnae chapter.
You have been with the Alzheimer's Association for nine years! What keeps you excited about the work that you're doing with this organization?
Everything! The Alzheimer’s Association is the world’s leading dementia research organization, and—with two new FDA-approved treatments which change the course of the disease—we can deliver hope to our families. I am so inspired by the love and dedication of our caregivers, the resolve of our advocates, and the strength of those living with the disease. Working in this community is extremely rewarding and motivating to me.
What advice would you give your younger self about navigating the workplace and career?
To chill out and live in the moment more. I’ll probably always be a worrier, but I’ve learned over the years how to better put things into perspective.
What is one of your favorite moments of your career? (Any role!)
I would say that my work with advocacy + public policy communications would be highlights for me. One of the most memorable examples was a letter to the editor I penned and placed thanking state policymakers for supporting a piece of Alzheimer’s legislation, while also gently encouraging the one member of Congress that hadn’t yet gotten on board to take action. A few days after the piece had been published, our phone rang at the Association and the policymaker declared his support. (Needless to say, that delivered quite the charge!)
What's a challenge you faced in your career? How did you overcome it?
I’m an extrovert and people drive my energy. The pandemic did a number on me. Being isolated drained my battery and screwed with my focus. I had to revamp my work-life balance and learn how to reconnect in different ways. It took me more than a year, but I did it! On the other side, I am grateful for the opportunity to develop those new skills, coping strategies and perspectives. It’s all good (now)!
What's something you'd like to learn?
I have a long list of things I’d like to learn (one day) including returning to music to learn a new instrument, such as the violin. (My Pop-Pop was a classical musician.) Also, I interned during college at a radio station and fell in love with the medium. Now I find myself intrigued by the explosion of podcasting and want to learn more.
Just for fun – share a restaurant recommendation in the area!
I enjoy a good high tea. The Prince Tea House brings a modern twist to the time-honored tradition. I’ve been to the Marlton and Princeton, NJ locations. Next up—Philadelphia, then New York!
