Between You and MEdia - Kathleen Carey

Why did journalism seem like the career you wanted to pursue?

I liked that it allowed me to be a conduit to empower others a voice and, hopefully, in some cases, encourage them to use it more to build a stronger fabric to the community.

You have been with the Delaware County Daily Times since 1998. What keeps you excited about sharing news with the region?

I learn something new every day and I enjoy sharing information that can educate or entertain the community.

Can you share a few tips for the public relations professionals reading this article who have a story that is relevant to Delaware County to share. Is there anything that makes a pitch stand out in your inbox?

What makes something stand out and grab our attention is location. We are hyper-focused on Delaware County so direct relation to this county is imperative.

Is there a particular subject that you’ve always wanted to cover but haven’t had the opportunity? (Or, perhaps just an area that you’d like to cover more).

I like stories of resilience and passion. Whenever I can do a story of someone doing what they love such as someone starting a business, I enjoy sharing that enthusiasm with the community. I also have tremendous respect and am inspired by those who have faced great difficulties and how they find the motivation to keep going. I remember interviewing an older woman whose daughter, granddaughter and son-in-law were killed in a tornado in Montgomery County. She was understandably devastated and she was driven to make sure they weren't forgotten.

Can you share one of the most memorable events from your journalism career?

There's been so many but I'll share this. In 2009, I did an embed with the 1-150th Helicopter Assault Battalion based in Basrah, Iraq. As the operations were being led by a multi-national force, I had to first travel to Baghdad to get press credentials. As I was waiting for them, I walked around outside and took some pictures. A pair of armed Iraqi soldiers came up to me and told me to surrender my passport, so I did. I have always been grateful for the American soldier who saw this unfolding and came over and got it back. Then, on the helicopter flight out of Baghdad, I remember seeing these pink and green lights flying relatively close to the helicopter. I thought it might have been some Iraqi holiday as there were a lot of them in the sky. When I got to the base in Basrah, some of the soldiers chuckled and said, "Yeah, those weren't any fireworks."

Just for fun - what is an "uncovered gem" in Delaware County? This could be a great restaurant, brewery, bookstore, walking trail, or anything else.

Sure! I'll share two. One is the Darby Creek trail in Upper Darby near the Kent Dog Park. It's tucked away in a dense area and the foilage is great in the fall. I also would highly recommend Hmart on Terminal Square in Upper Darby, especially the second floor. Besides the shops, it has a food court and relatively new Paris Baguette that has good coffee and tasty pastries.
